ZMA DISTURBED WITH HEALTH MINISTER’S ATTACKS ON MEDICAL DOCTORS

By Prudence Siabana

The Zambia Medical Association -ZMA-is dismayed at the unsubstantiated allegations, made by Health Minister Sylvia Masebo during the recently held 58th ZMA scientific conference and Annual General Meeting in Livingstone.

During the AGM held in Livingstone last week, Ms. Masebo accused medical doctors in senior management positions within Ministry of Health structures and allied statutory bodies of running down the health system and alleged that the chronic and critical shortages of drugs and medical supplies in public institutions is as a

result of pilfering by healthcare workers among other issues she raised.

BUT ZMA Secretary General Dr. Kaumba Tolopu says the Minister’s remarks are disappointing, looking at the many sacrifices and donations doctors make from their own time and pockets to ensure that patients receive the highest possible care, even in the face of drug shortages.

Dr. Tolopu says to be accused of stealing from a system that health workers are breaking their backs to support is nothing short of a slap in the face.
