LUSAKA PIGGERIES STILL FREE FROM AFRICAN SWINE FEVER

By Sepo Akabondo

The Ministry Of Fisheries and Livestock has assured that Lusaka piggeries are still free from African Swine fever following confirmed cases of the disease in Livingstone which has forced the ministry to yet again impose a ban on the sale of pork products in the tourist capital.

Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Director Veterinary Services, Dr. Geoffrey Muuka has explained to Phoenix News that this is because the source of the outbreak has not yet been identified thus impacting the containment

of the disease.

Dr. Muuka however says the ministry is embarking on a comprehensive surveillance in Choma, Kalomo and Livingstone and Kazungula districts in southern province as they are suspected to be the source of the outbreak due to the surrounding game parks where animals could have spread the disease through domestic pigs.

He has however assured that the outbreak will not affect pork business in Lusaka because no case has been recorded so far since the disease was contained about 3 months ago.
