TIZ DISTURBED BY APNAC`S ALLEGED ATTACKS ON ACC AND DEC

By Leah Ngoma

Transparency International Zambia-TIZ- is concerned that the new African Parliamentary Network Against Corruption-APNAC- executive appears to be using the network to needlessly attack law enforcement agencies.

This follows a statement attributed to Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa in his capacity as chairperson of the Zambia chapter of APNAC in which he raised concern about the approach taken by the ACC and DEC in fighting corruption in Zambia.

TIZ Executive Director Maurice Nyambe is concerned that the new APNAC executive appears to have aligned itself with those who have continued to seek public sympathy through their claims that the corruption fight is an

exercise that amounts to political persecution of members of the former ruling Patriotic Front.

Mr. Nyambe is reminding Mr. Sampa and the entire leadership of APNAC that the chapter is a credible organization which, since its formation in 1999, has promoted accountability, transparency and public participation in the processes of government as the best ways to fight corruption.

He says TIZ is therefore of the view that instead of this incessant attack on law enforcement agencies leading the fight against corruption in Zambia, the chapter should be in the forefront in providing solidarity and support to these entities in order to strengthen the fight.
