LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES URGED TO ENSURE TRANSPARENCY WHEN DEALING WITH AFFAIRS OF FOREIGN NATIONALS

By Chileshe Mwango

Transparency International Zambia –TIZ- has called for transparency in the manner law enforcement agencies deal with affairs of foreign nationals.

TIZ president Sampa Kalungu observes that foreigners especially refugees have been victims of abuse by law enforcement agencies who sometimes solicit for bribes because they are vulnerable and lack information on how their matters are handled.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Kalungu notes that some law enforcers work without

integrity and take advantage of the vulnerability of the refugees especially Rwandese and Congolese and extort bribes from them.
Mr. Kalungu has since advised the Anti-Corruption Commission –ACC- to work closely with enforcement agencies and sensitize them on the need for transparency as they work with refugees.

Some foreign nationals living in various parts of the country have complained of being harassed by law enforcement agencies who ask for bribes from them.
