GOVT URGED TO REVERSE CANCELLATION OF HUNTING CONCESSIONS IN NKALA GAME MANAGEMENT AREA

By Chileshe Mwango

The Shezongo Community Resource Board-CRB- has appealed to government to reverse the cancellation of hunting concessions in Nkala Game Management area of Itezhi-tezhi district, Central Province awarded to JBZ Safaris.

In an interview with Phoenix News, area CRB Chairperson Mubita Kaongolo explains that failure to reverse this cancellation will result in high deforestation and challenges of human-animal conflict.

Mr. Kaongolo further explains that in 2019, the board awarded JBZ Safaris hunting concessions but a named

outfitter whose concession expired earlier, refused to vacate the area until recently when the community rose against him.

He says just when JBZ was about to move into Nkala Game Management area, government cancelled all hunting concessions.

Mr. Kaongolo is concerned that this move will affect the community as the animal population in the area keeps growing while some people are also encroaching in the game management area for farming purposes and are cutting trees uncontrollably.
