Government has launched investigations into recent school accidents that led to death of some learners in the country and will take appropriate against school managements that will be found wanting.

This follows recent school related accidents that led to the deaths of some learners among them, 4 pupils of Nanga High School in mazabuka district who drowned after they failed to swim while doing some training in an old gravel pit filled with water, death of a 3 year-old child who was crushed to death after a concrete zebra statue she was playing with fell on her in Chongwe District

and a 4-year-old boy, who died after a table fell on him at Lusaka’s Damishael Christian Academy.

Acting Education Minister Elijah Muchima says the ministry is currently scrutinizing reports received on the incidents and appropriate action will be taken against head teachers in public schools while in private schools, government will be left with no choice but to deregister them where negligence will be established.

Giving a ministerial statement in parliament this morning, Mr Muchima says the safety of learners is of paramount to government adding that school managements have the responsibility as immediately second parents to learners to ensure their safety.
